The Hampton Inn is the official hotel of TriZPUG Boot Camps at UNC-CH. Ask for the Camp 5 rate of $79/night (use discount code "CBS" until February 23). Ask for the UNC rate elsewhere and after the Hampton Inn cut-off date. There are several other options, mostly more expensive ones. Because space, especially parking, in Chapel Hill and around the university is at a premium, plan to stay at least a couple of miles out and take hotel shuttles (check with hotels) or utilize Chapel Hill's free bus service. If you drive, please expect to park several long blocks away from the classroom and pay an exorbitant daily rate for the privilege.
Chapel Hill Free Transit Service
The Chapel Hill Hampton Inn on Hwy 15-501/Fordham Blvd. is 2.87 miles from campus. Has just undergone a one million dollar renovation and all the room furnshings are new. Free wireless service throughout the rooms and a public computer in the lobby. A full breakfast bar every morning. Hor d'oeuvres and open bar every Tuesday and Wednesday evening. McDonald's, a Chinese buffet, a very large sports bar, a shopping center, and the Sheraton are neighbors. On the D and CL free bus lines. A block of 40 rooms are on reserve at the special Camp 5 rate of $79/night until February 23. BBQ Sprint sponsored sprinters are staying here. Note: do not confuse with the other new Hampton Inn in Chapel Hill on Farrington Road, which is farther away from Camp 5.
The Carolina Inn is the ultimate in convenience. It is one block from Camp 5. Your Camp 5 instructor and your BBQ Sprintmaster are staying here. The definition of old Southern gentility. Six figure traveling university big wigs stay here. Developers generally don't. But developers have been known to spend Friday evenings in the summer sipping Mint Juleps on the porch here while listening to live bluegrass. Note if you are bringing the family: the rooms are small.
The Franklin Hotel is a brand new luxury boutique hotel within four easy walking blocks of Camp 5. Most rooms have a private balcony with wrought iron patio furniture. Massive fitness facilities. Very posh bar/lounge off lobby. On the West End restaurant and clubbing strip. Stay here if money is no object.
The Courtyard is 2 miles from campus. Brand-spanking new. Next to the UNC System's Friday Center for Continuing Education, a university park and ride location served well by the free local bus service (take the FCX, HU, or S bus line to Fetzer Gym). Small breakfast room, fitness center and indoor pool. The fashionable restaurant and shopping center of Meadowmont is directly across Hwy 54. More expensive than most.
The Sienna Hotel is two miles from campus, is four star, and is home to the famed Il Palio fine Italian restaurant. Only Michelin star in the Triangle. Great place for a wild wedding party. On the D, CL, and F bus lines. Tres expensive.
The Best Western University Inn is 2 miles from campus. It's an ancient place with roadside motel "charm" if that's your thing. At one time the only place to stay in Chapel Hill. Literally. Two small shopping centers with a grocer and good Thai, Sushi, and steakhouse restaurants are less than a half of a mile away (although the steakhouse is unbelievably expensive and booked months in advance). On the HU, S, and V bus lines.
The Days Inn is 2.5 miles from campus. Adjacent to a quirky shopping center with very casual restaurants. Across the street from the Holiday Inn. One block from the Hampton Inn. On the F and G bus lines.
The Holiday Inn is across the street from the Days Inn and a shopping center. The hotel is very seventies but full service. Many civic clubs and local conventions meet here. One block from the Hampton Inn. On the F and G bus lines.
The Sheraton Chapel Hill Hotel is three miles from campus. The fine dining restaurant and lounge inside were once hot spots, many, many years ago. Same price range as The Carolina Inn. One block from the Hampton Inn. On the D and CL bus lines.
The Residence Inn is three miles from campus and across and intersection from the Sheraton. One block from the Hampton Inn. One of the extended stay type of places where you get a small apartment for a week. Pricey but less than the Sheraton. A few steps to the the D and CL bus lines.
The Red Roof Inn is farthest away at 5 miles from campus. The absolute least expensive, it is not all that bad. Stay here when every penny counts. On an interstate interchange across the bridge from a mega-huge shopping and commercialized dining sprawl zone. Short walk to the D bus line.
